Ocean Park Beach runs along San Juan's Atlantic coast between Condado and Punta Las Marías. It is wide, golden and, compared with the resort beaches, refreshingly local. We live one block from it, so here is what we tell our guests.
Go early
Mornings are the beach's best hours. The water is usually at its calmest before the trade winds build, the light is soft, and you'll share the sand with dog walkers and early swimmers. Our perfect day on Calle Taft starts here at 6:45 AM for a reason.
The afternoon belongs to the wind
As the breeze picks up, the kites come out — Ocean Park is one of San Juan's favorite spots for kiteboarding — and the beach volleyball nets fill up. It's a great time to watch rather than swim.
Swimming and safety
Conditions on the Atlantic change with the season and the swell. Swim where others are swimming, watch for posted flags and signs, never swim alone, and skip the water on rough days. Keep phones and valuables with you rather than on your towel.
What to bring
Water, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and some shade in the middle of the day — the Caribbean sun is strong year-round. At 59 TAFT, beach towels come with every room, and chair-and-cooler kits are available for $15/day.
Eating nearby
Walk back from the sand to Café Regina and Hilda on our corner, or to the restaurants and bars along Calle Loíza. Our local guide keeps the current list, including a beach bar right on Ocean Park.
